Electromyography (EMG)

What is EMG?

In the EMG nervous system, the examination of the spinal cord, nerve roots, end nerves and muscles of the spinal cord is called as EMG.

The EMG can be completed in one or two stages, depending on the reason for its application. The first step is to give information about how the nerves are transmitted by giving tiny electrical currents; the second stage in which the muscles are evaluated and fine disposable, sterile needles are used. The duration of the examination may be 20-60 minutes, depending on the cause. The patient should come to the examination with a full stomach and care should be taken to ensure that the area to be examined is clean in order to make a correct evaluation.

In which diseases is the EMG procedure performed?

In diseases affecting the nerves and muscles, EMG can be requested. In some cases it may not be sufficient by itself and is supplemented by additional examinations. This examination is often requested by the neurology physicians in the diagnosis of the cause of pain caused by nerve end-pain and nerve damage in cases of neck and lumbar hernia disorders, muscle melting and loss of strength.

In conclusion, EMG examination is a valuable diagnostic method that helps us to be informed in detail about the nature of nerve damage in the spinal cord and nerve roots, muscles and end nerves, where the compression is, the nature of nerve damage, and how and when the healing occurs.
