PET / CT

PET / CT is a comprehensive imaging modality that provides both metabolic and morphological information about organs of the body at the same time. With this method which is based on three-dimensional tomographic imaging of the body with very low dose of radioactive substances which have no side effects to the human body, This method is a medical imaging technique used in the detection of live tumor tissue in suspected malignant masses, determination of the extent of cancer spread (staging), evaluation of treatment response to these patients, and radiotherapy planning. This method is also used in the post-treatment period of cancer patients to investigate the recurrence of cancer disease.

The most common types of oncologic PET / CT imaging include;

  • PET / CT Lung cancer,
  • Head and neck tumors,
  • Colon and rectum cancer,
  • Lymphoma,
  • Malign melanoma,
  • PET/CT Breast cancer,
  • PET/CT Thyroid cancer,
  • Gynecological tumors such as ovarian, endometrial and cervical cancer,
  • Primary or metastatic brain tumors,
  • Tumors whose primary focus cannot be determined.

In our country, the most commonly used radioactive substance in PET / CT, Flor 18, is combined with deoxyglucose (FDG), which allows allows all organs in the body to be visualized by showing biodistribution in all tissues with glucose. The oncologic PET / CT study is based on the principle that live tumor tissue shows FDG uptake at a higher density than normal.

Neurological PET / CT is used to determine the focus triggering epilepsy in epilepsy patients and to diagnose dementia and other dementia diseases in Alzheimer's patients. Cardiac PET / CT is a method that can be used to predict the presence of viable muscle tissue in the infarcted heart and predict if the patients can benefit from bypass surgery who are infarcted and who are candidates for coronary artery bypass surgery.
